Debra and I wanted to give you all a quick update on Gertie. She has settled in after two weeks and stole our hearts! She is a delightful doggie and has become very territorial of the home and protective of both Debra and I. Of course she is getting spoiled rotten and lots of love, but that's what companions are for.

She is doing well - there were a few accidents at first in the house but she is getting the hang of going outside for potty. She is doing really well in that respect. It must be very stressful on a pooch re-locating like this to a new place but she is doing well. She is, as Debra calls her, a "snuggle bug" but also full of pep and energy and loves to play - I think she is on the young side of two as she loves to play with her toys and to wrestle and "box" with me.

We thank you so much for Gertie - she has brought a lot of love and joy into our home!

Take care and enjoy the photos, we will stop by to visit one Saturday.

Mark

(Gert was found on the side of a deserted road, emaciated, Heartworm positive and full of fleas and ticks)

Sherman now Smooth doing his job!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; It's been about 6 months since I first met her at your shelter in Roswell and she's really made a lot of progress. When I first sat with her in the adoption room she just sat there shaking. It's taken time and a whole lot of patience but, she has transformed into the happiest most loving dog. She lost a bit of weight and is full of mischief and energy. She follows me everywhere I go and pushes Jeff out of the way to greet me when I come home from work. She was pretty terrified of him for the first few months but now she follows him around too and greets him with the same level of enthusiasm. I wanted to thank you for letting me adopt her. She's made a big difference in our lives with her unyielding affection and companionship.

thanks,
Elizabeth

Kirby - 8 years of LOVE!

Hello to everyone there at Southern Hope,
I just wanted you to know that Kirby is still doing extremely well. We can’t believe we have had him for almost a year already! Tank is growing up fast but still has his puppy personality. He’s the perfect gentleman around the house and a big couch potato. He loves running around in the fenced yard chasing birds and squirrels. Sometimes he just refuses to come inside! We recently started taking him on runs with us around the neighborhood and he’s really good about running on the leash and looking out for traffic. We have also taken him to some horse shows and he loves meeting the horses, kids and other dogs at the shows. He went to the Roswell High School 4th of July celebration this year and surprisingly enjoyed the fireworks show! He has also taken up swimming this summer and is learning how to swim from his big sister, Dixie, our 10 year old chocolate lab. He has grown since our last update to about 115 pounds. He is an amazing watchdog and burglar deterrent – I wish I could send you a recording of his bark through email – it’s amazing!! He’s a very happy and healthy boy and we love having him around.

Hope all is going well at Southern Hope! Thanks for all you do!

-John & She is a fabulous doggie and we love her soooooo much.

We just wanted you to know how happy she is and how happy we are now that she is a part of our lives. She goes for walks every day, she gets to play in her fenced in yard and she loves to chase after squirrels. She is also a great "kisser" and my husband gets wet kisses on his nose every day!

Thank you for rescuing her. We adopted them in September as Liberty and Justice, two adorable kitty brothers. They are a delight and bring such joy (and chaos, racket, and destruction!!!) to our house. No matter how much mischief they get into, they always make up for it with snuggles, purring, and affection. They are truly part of the family and we could not imagine them not being with us. Attached is a picture showing they can be good! We noticed that his sister, Sugah, is still listed on your website as “available”.” We thought that by telling everyone about Tank, it might persuade a would-be-adopter to give Sugah a chance!!
Tank has grown since we adopted him 4 months ago and he now weighs about 85 pounds! He is such a wonderful dog and he really is a “tank!” He’s beginning to grow out of puppy hood and has been given many more freedoms around the house as of late. He is completely housebroken and crate trained. He cries by the back door when he needs to go outside. He sleeps all night in his crate and never whines or complains. He loves his big sister, Dixie, and they play constantly. He also loves playing with other dogs, big or small. He just finished his basic obedience training and passed with flying colors! He is also great with little kids. He is an excellent watch dog and has a very loud, deep bark which he is not afraid to use when strangers come by. I would classify Tank as a “power chewer” and we always have a hard, natural bone available for chewing so we have never had trouble with him chewing things he is not supposed to chew. He is a big cuddle-bug and loves curling up on the couch to watch TV. Although he is definitely part Labrador, he is much calmer and more laid back than any lab I have ever been around – but he still loves to play! He loves eating and will stand patiently by the pantry door when he wants to be fed.
I honestly wish I had room in my house for Sugah too, her brother has been an absolute blessing to our little family.
I have attached some recent pictures of Tank, including one of him sleeping with my friend’s 11 week old Jack Russell puppy! Hope you enjoy them!!

Thanks!
John Rotella & Melissa Gaynor

Otis

Otis is one of the hundreds of dogs who are saved by Southern Hope's transport program. His new family sent us this update:

Hi! We wanted to update you on Brady (formerly known as Otis). We adopted Brady on October 10th, 2009. On his first day home he ate a winter coat and a wooden chair. But things got better quickly! We just graduated from Manners I class. Brady now walks nicely on his leash, sits when told, and LOVES his people. He is still a theif- stealing mostly stuffed animals.
Brady needs lots of excercise (runs and walks) and loves to go to Doggie Daycare to play with his dog friends. It turns out that Brady isn't a Border Collie mix. We did DNA testing and he's Chow Chow, Dalmation, and Doberman. This explains why he was fired from his job herding/chasing geese at the golf course! He's not a Border Collie at all!

Brady is a great addition to the family. The kids love him and one of the cats is trying to make friends with him!

-Tami Greig

Snuggles

Dear Southern Hope,

I wanted to write with an update on Snuggles (the cat formerly known as Chip). I adopted him from SHHS in March 2008, after my sweet 18-year old kitty passed away. Snuggles zoomed in and has cheered me up ever since! He rules the apartment from his perch on top of the sofa, and sometimes ambushes my foster kitties from up there. However, he also plays a very sweet paternal role to them, grooming them and letting them snuggle with him once he’s let them know who’s boss. He’s traveled with me on planes and in cars down to see his “grandparents” in Florida, and behaved quite well. I’m so thankful to you all for rescuing Snuggles and bringing him into my life!
-Leslie Curry

Murphy

Just wanted to update you on our adopted puppy. My little princess (the alpha) had one little tift with Watson over a food crumb on the floor, but other than that things have been great. You would think the way they all lay around and watch t.v. with us that they had been doing it forever.

I love happy endings, don't you? Thanks for all your hard work and dedication. We will take good care of the boys. They are going to see the vet and get a hairstyle this week. He is having a ball in his back yard, he has lots of neighbor kids that come over daily to play with him, Zeke Ingraham has his own Facebook account if you’d like to become a friend! He is so spoiled, but he deserves it. He is a very loving dog and has really come into his own…he has more confidence now (though he still puts his ears back at times) and has lots of doggie friends in the neighborhood – his favorites are Spanky, Reilly (both Jack Russells) Bailey (Boxer/Beagle) and Gizmo (Pomeranian). We walk the entire neighborhood 3 times a day (sometimes 4) and get to visit all his buddies numerous times…it’s a rough life let me tell ya! During the day when he’s not playing, he is laying under the chair where my husband Ed works from home…he’s a good protector of us. Everyone thinks he’s a Puggle when they see him…so we went on Puggle.org and it sure looks like he could be one of them…though we’ll never know. We thought that was pretty interesting!

Charlie

Dear Ally,

We wanted to give you an update on Charlie (formally boyfriend). Charlie has adapted very well and is getting along great with his new 3 sisters. He is the most sweetest and adorable boy we have ever met. We are so lucky to have him. The vet said he is healthy but a little overweight, so we are working on that. We are taking him on small walks and put him on a healthy diet and tasty chicken snacks. Over all, he is a happy fellow. He loves to get hugs and kisses all the time. We are all so in love with him. Thank you for all your work. I just wanted to give everyone an update on my new best friend, Sheba. I brought her home on Wednesday and her reluctance to be here began from the time she got out of my vehicle, haha. Apparently, she has been in kennel care for such a long time that she is unfamiliar with the outside world almost. So, we began to make the trip up the stairs at my apt complex--and I think she has never seen stairs before, she didn't quite know what to do. So, she made it up the first flight, but wasn't too sure about the second, so I carried her the rest of the way, lol.

We came home and her exploration began! Some of her unique discoveries include: a big fluffy green thing to lounge on (my couch), a really soft "something or other" to wrap up in to keep warm (my mink blanket), and this big box that people talk out of (the TV)...she actually loves to watch TV! The first place she went was to my bed, she jumped right in after her exploration and snoozed for quite some time as I am sure she was mentally exhausted from changing environments. I let her sleep as long as she wanted.

As of Thanksgiving night, her tail has begun to wag consistently, and she is slowly but surely coming out of her shell. I cannot wait to see her full-fledged personality in action. She has also been on 3 long walks already to explore her new territory here and I let her play in the big dog-run area. She is still trying to figure everything out about her new surroundings. And last but not least....she had a big piece of turkey for Thanksgiving, and her first bone immediately thereafter.

I can really tell that she misses all of you and I would like to thank you for treating her so well. It is so obvious that when you look in her eyes, she really does miss all of you and she looks sad. But I promise, her tail wagging will be a thing of the norm once she has adjusted.

Thanks again,

Shane Cantrell

Zeke

As promised here are photo updates of Zeke from Thanksgiving …he is enjoying his new found spot on top of the sofa in the sun. He's a mixed Husky/Shepherd Mix and has been a challenge and delight since we adopted him. He was a mouther, still mouths a wee bit, mostly to grab our hands to lead us to take him to go outside, but doesn't have a lick of aggression in his body.

He is the best snuggler in the world and loves to be close to people, loves to snuggle with his back against any perons back and loves to have his back rubbed. Oh, and he loves to dive into soft snuggly things and has a host of stuffed animals that he has taken a keen interest in.

He has a nose for any human food product and will often ignore his food bowl until he's sure he can't sneak any food from our teens. He loves' rawhide bones and especially likes pig ear chewies - we throw in a milk-bone for diversionary tactics along the way. Wolfie can smell food and sneak in for a steal with such stealth!

Wolfie is close to two years old now - a bit awkward and hasn't always grasped space and relationships - he'll dive head long onto the couch, and just hang out as if the humans don't exist. Or dive bomb in a bed just to get to something soft while walking all over your head. He's a loveable friendly dog.
Wolfie was scared of brooms, scared of car noises, scared of going out side when a car came by (or any noises), loved to eat paper out of nervousness when we first got him. My son loved that scenerio, how true can it be that the dog "really" did eat your homework.

Thank you Southern Hope. You recommended we change his name, but there was nothing that was fitting.

He's a great dog and we are blessed to have him!
Karen Miller

Luna

Ally and Southern Hope Family,

Thank you so much for allowing us the opportunity to be Sarah/Luna’s family. Mom & Dad spoil us with lots of toys, playtime, and tons of kisses. I am so happy that I got to go to my forever home with my sister Lola. We love each other so much that Mom & Dad cannot keep us apart for long. We are always waiting for each other, wrestling, or giving each other lots of kisses. I love to run and run on walks and pick up little leaves and sticks and run around with them in my mouth. My sister Lola likes to cuddle in Mom’s lap but I do my best to chew on her ears and get her to wrestle with me. My favorite toy is a pink dog and Lola likes to fetch mini tennis balls and bring them back to our bed. Thank you for helping us find Natasha and Sean, we love them so!

xoxo,

Spencer & Lola (formerly Teddy Bear & Sweetie Pie)
Adopted 11.14.09

Maggie's First Snow

Hey All,

Let me know when you get tired of Maggie pictures. Whatever kind of mutt mix she is, she's got some kind of snow dog in her. Maybe she's an artic mix. :) She went NUTS in the snow. We can't get her to come in. She's just rolling around like a maniac. I can't stop laughing at her. Right now she's just laying out there refusing to come in. The cold does not bother her at all, but I had to come in!

Laura

Maggie's Happy Holidays

Hi all,

Here are some recent pictures of Maggie. She usually looks happier, I think the hat was annoying her :). She promptly tried to eat it when she was done posing. But she's part of the family and must deal with me taking goofy holiday pictures.

She's doing amazingly well and we could not love her more. She's gained 12 pounds, I'm thinking I may have to cut back and actually put her on a diet now. She's lazy and happy. We can't wait to celebrate our first Christmas with her. I think she's getting more toys than the kids. You never know, we may be back in to get her a playmate.

Happy Holidays to all and thanks for all you do,
Laura Katzman

Sadie

Just wanted to update you on Sadie (a.k.a.sandy) whom we adopted last year. She is such a sweet dog that loves to be outside running around at the dog park, or just walking and sniffing lots and lots of the sidewalk/ground! LOL She was a bit underweight when we got her, but that soon changed as she loves her treats and of course her bellyrubs. I just wanted to say that your center is a gift from above and we truly are blessed that you are there. Thanks so much for caring for all the animals!!

Love, Doug, Amy, Taylor & David

Charly

Charly (you knew her as Blondie) is absolutely adorable, loving, very playful and fits into our family perfectly. Ginger has become the newest member of our family and every day we say that she was there waiting for us!!! She now comes on car trips with us. We even bought a new bike with a rack for my mom, so we could put a milk crate on the back and carry her along with us on our frequent bike rides. She absolutely loves bike and car rides. The funny thing about the whole adoption was that my parents told my two brothers and I that we weren't going to get the first cute dog we see, but you guys were the first place we went to. Then once we got in the dog room they didn't see Ginger, but I did so I showed my mom and she fell in love. So we took her in to the meeting room, and we knew immediately that she was the one! I am the middle child in my family and I started thinking about how she got here and how lucky we are to have her, so I wanted to thank you guys!

Thank You,
Jon Caulk
